In a surprising announcement, Jeff Tedford, the head coach of Fresno State's football program, has decided to step down due to health reasons. This marks the end of his second stint with the Bulldogs, as he was previously forced to resign in 2019 for the same reason.

The 62-year-old Tedford expressed his sadness at the decision but emphasized the importance of prioritizing his health. "It is with sad emotions that following my recent medical check-up, it is clear that due to health concerns, my family and I have made the decision to step aside as Fresno State's head coach and allow someone else to lead the football program," said Tedford in a statement released by the school.

Following Tedford's departure, the school announced that Tim Skipper, the current assistant head coach and linebackers coach, will serve as the interim coach. Skipper, a former Fresno State linebacker, has been involved in coaching for over two decades and will now lead the team in the upcoming 2024 college football season.

Under Tedford's leadership, Fresno State achieved a commendable record of 45-22 in his two stints as head coach. In the last two seasons alone, the Bulldogs boasted a combined 19-8 record. The team is now looking to extend their success in the upcoming season, aiming for their fourth consecutive nine-win season, a feat not achieved since 2001-2004.

Despite the setback, the Bulldogs have reason for optimism. With eight starters returning on offense and six on defense, Fresno State is poised to display a strong performance on both sides of the ball. Additionally, the team's recruiting efforts have paid off, as they secured the fifth-best recruiting class and the seventh-best transfer portal class in 2024. Among their notable recruits is Korey Foreman, a former top recruit who initially started his career at USC.

Fresno State's opening game of the season is scheduled for August 31, where they will face off against Michigan. The Bulldogs were ranked third in the preseason Mountain West poll, as announced during Media Days, which Tedford attended.

Throughout his coaching career, Tedford has established himself as an esteemed quarterback guru, having developed talents such as Aaron Rodgers, Kyle Boller, David Carr, and Joey Harrington, among others. His own playing career at Fresno State as a quarterback in the 1980s further solidifies his connection to the Bulldogs' program.

As Fresno State embarks on a new chapter without their legendary coach, the team remains focused on their goals for the upcoming season, determined to continue their winning tradition.
