Israeli Settlers Under Police Protection Attack Palestinian Athletes in East Jerusalem Stadium
In a disturbing incident on Sunday, gangs of illegal Israeli settlers reportedly descended upon the West Bank and East Jerusalem, engaging in acts of violence against Palestinian athletes and civilians. The Palestinian News Agency, also known as Wafa, reported that the attackers, shielded by police, stormed the soccer stadium in the At-Tur neighborhood, where players and coaches were present.
The details of the attack are still emerging, but witnesses described a terrifying scene of chaos and intimidation. The Israeli settlers hurled rocks at cars near Ramallah, causing damage to at least one vehicle. Following this incident, the settlers targeted the village of Duma in the West Bank, setting fire to Palestinian land, including olive fields and crops.
Suleiman Dawabsha, the head of the Duma Village Council, lamented the destruction caused by the fire and noted that efforts to control it were hindered by Israeli forces. The villagers are still grappling with the aftermath of a major market fire in Ramallah, which was also attributed to illegal Israeli settlers.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Ramallah, Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian-owned cars near the Rawabi roundabout. Fortunately, only one vehicle sustained damage.
Amidst these disturbing events, police were seen forcefully interacting with Orthodox Jewish protesters who were demonstrating against mandatory conscription into the Israeli military. Videos circulating on social media captured authorities grabbing and forcibly removing protesters who were obstructing a roadway. Israeli Police reported that ten individuals were arrested, including a protester who had allegedly attacked a policeman. They also announced that the road was reopened to traffic following the arrests.
The Israeli settler attacks and the subsequent actions taken by the police have caused an uproar among Palestinian communities. The incidents highlight the ongoing tension and volatility in the region, as well as the need for greater accountability and protection for Palestinian individuals and their property.
This latest episode of violence serves as a reminder of the delicate situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, where disputes over land, resources, and political rights continue to fuel tensions between Israelis and Palestinians. The international community must remain watchful and press for a peaceful resolution that respects the rights and dignity of all parties involved.
