Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu informed the country's parliament about the potential implementation of the military's proposed "Generals' Plan" in northern Gaza. The plan, aimed at evacuating all residents from the area to enforce a complete siege, is being considered amidst ongoing concerns of Hamas regrouping in the region. This initiative, not supported by the US, was presented by former Israel Defense Force Maj. Gen. Giora Eiland before the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee last week.
Eiland's plan involves establishing a military zone in northern Gaza following the evacuation, targeting any individuals in the area and restricting the entry of supplies. The evacuation, estimated to impact around 250,000 residents, is designed to allow IDF forces to take control and neutralize remaining members of Hamas. The purpose of this operation is to prevent further resurgence of the terrorist group and address the security threats posed by their activities.
Netanyahu reiterated his belief in utilizing military pressure to secure the release of the 97 Israeli hostages held by Hamas. The Prime Minister accused Hamas of obstructing negotiations for the captives' release by introducing new conditions that were not part of the US-backed proposal. Concerns have been raised by the hostages' families over Netanyahu's prioritization of military objectives, particularly the maintenance of control over the Philadelphi Corridor at the Gaza-Egypt border, which has been a point of contention in the peace negotiations.
