Salehi's lawyer, Amir Raesian, took to Twitter on Wednesday to reveal that an order for Salehi's execution has been issued.
The 33-year-old rapper has faced multiple arrests by Iranian forces for openly criticizing the regime's corruption and suppression of protests. These protests were sparked by the tragic death of Jina "Mahsa" Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman who died while in the custody of morality police for wearing a loose headscarf.
The Recording Academy, known for organizing the prestigious Grammy Awards, expressed deep concern over Salehi's sentencing. In a statement released on Friday evening, they stated that no artist should live in fear for their life or livelihood when expressing themselves through art. The Recording Academy emphasized the power of music as a force for good and pledged to continue working tirelessly to protect artistic freedom worldwide.
Well-known rapper Meek Mill also spoke out against Salehi's arrest and sentencing, expressing disbelief over his death sentence in a tweet: "Got sentenced to death over a song, free that man wtf." He followed it up with a plea to free Salehi.
The United States' Office of the Special Envoy for Iran joined the chorus of condemnation, strongly criticizing Salehi's death sentence and the five-year sentence handed to Kurdish-Iranian rapper Saman Yasin. The office called for their immediate release, highlighting these cases as examples of the Iranian regime's disregard for human rights and its repression of democratic change.
Salehi had initially been sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in protests following Amini's death. However, he was released after the Supreme Court of Iran identified flaws in the original sentence. Unfortunately, in November, the rapper was rearrested after revealing in a video that he had been tortured and held in solitary confinement for 252 days since his arrest in October 2022, as reported by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Prominent Iranian actors, including Nazanin Boniadi, Arian Moayed, and Maz Jobrani, have been advocating for Salehi's release since last year. Boniadi emphasized that Salehi was arrested for peacefully exercising his human rights, including freedom of expression, in a video for Amnesty International. Jobrani, a comedian, expressed his disbelief at the imprisonment of artists for merely expressing their voices.
The international community continues to rally behind Toomaj Salehi, urging the Iranian government to reconsider his death sentence and demanding the immediate release of the rapper and other artists unjustly imprisoned. As the situation unfolds, it remains uncertain what fate awaits Salehi, but the outcry for justice and artistic freedom resonates worldwide.
