The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that unmanned aerial vehicles were launched "from within its territory towards Israel." The IDF is closely monitoring the situation and has placed its Aerial Defense Array, fighter jets, and Navy vessels on high alert to protect Israeli airspace.
While specific details about the assault are limited, Israeli officials have estimated that it could take several hours before the drones reach Israeli airspace. In response to the attack, National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson stated that "Iran has begun an airborne attack against Israel." President Biden, who recently returned to the White House, is being regularly updated on the situation by his national security team and has affirmed the United States' unwavering support for Israel's defense against threats from Iran.
The United States is prepared for further action from Iran and its proxies within the region. U.S. officials have confirmed that they are positioned in Iraq and Syria to intercept and shoot down incoming drones from Iran. Additionally, U.S. fighter jets are on standby to provide assistance if needed.
It is believed that Iran's attack is a direct response to an Israeli strike on an Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, on April 1, which resulted in the death of seven members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a video address to Israeli citizens, reassured them that the country is prepared for any scenario and that Israel's defense systems are fully deployed.
In anticipation of the attack, the Israel Home Front Command has issued guidelines limiting gatherings to a maximum of 1,000 people and closed all schools until at least Monday. The public has been advised to remain near safe rooms and shelters. U.S. embassies in the Middle East are also on high alert, and American diplomats in Lebanon and Israel have been instructed to avoid certain areas within those countries.
Lebanon has also launched missiles towards northern Israel, while Jordan has closed its airspace due to the escalating risks in the region and has declared a state of emergency. In response, Israel has announced the closure of its airspace from 1:00 to 5:00 a.m. local time.
Earlier reports had indicated that a major Iranian attack against Israel was imminent, potentially involving more than 100 drones and dozens of missiles aimed at military targets within Israel. It is believed that Iran may carry out these attacks directly or through proxy groups in the region that have received additional arms in recent weeks.
The U.S. State Department has issued a warning to Americans in Israel, advising them not to travel outside major cities where the Iron Dome missile defense system provides greater protection against incoming rocket fire.
As tensions continue to mount in the region, the international community is closely watching the evolving situation. The ongoing conflict underscores the need for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and prevent further violence.
