### Democratic Super PAC Invests in Texas to Back Rep. Colin Allred Against Sen. Ted Cruz
In an effort to gain traction in the Texas Senate race, a Democratic super PAC is launching a significant television ad campaign to support Rep. Colin Allred. The Senate Majority PAC, the primary outside group aiding Democratic Senate campaigns, will spend $5 million on TV ads across major Texas cities such as Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio, marking their first major investment in TV advertising for this race.
This comes alongside the PAC's recent announcement of a "multi-million dollar" investment in digital and radio ads in Texas. Though Democrats have not secured a statewide victory in Texas for three decades, close electoral outcomes in recent years have fuelled Democratic optimism.
One of the PAC's new TV ads centers on abortion, featuring a woman named Nancy, who ties her opposition to Sen. Ted Cruz to his support for restrictive abortion policies. "Ted Cruz's abortion ban makes it illegal for me to provide them care," she says. "I could never vote for Ted Cruz. Colin Allred will restore a woman's right to make her own medical decisions."
Senate Majority PAC president JB Poersch has strongly criticized Sen. Cruz, calling him a "danger to the people of Texas" and highlighting his support for the state's stringent abortion laws. In contrast, Allred is portrayed as a candidate who will safeguard women's reproductive rights and offer bipartisan leadership.
Sen. Cruz has countered by linking Allred to Vice President Kamala Harris, stating, "Colin Allred is Kamala Harris." Democrats are keen to maintain their slim Senate majority, especially with vulnerable Democratic incumbents in states like Montana and Ohio.
Texas, a traditionally Republican stronghold, has become more contested, with Donald Trump winning the state by only six points in the 2020 presidential election— the narrowest margin since 1996. Democrats see Cruz as particularly vulnerable, given that he narrowly defeated former Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke by just three points in 2018.
The urgency behind this investment is clear, as Cruz has faced criticism within his party for not receiving sufficient resources from Senate Republican leadership. Despite calls for support, the Senate Leadership Fund, aligned with Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, has yet to allocate funds to Texas.
Since Labor Day, Democrats have funneled $57.2 million into the race, with Allred's campaign contributing the bulk of this sum by spending $44 million on ads. In contrast, Republicans have invested $47.5 million, with Cruz’s campaign contributing $17.2 million. Additionally, Cruz has received significant aid from the Truth and Courage PAC, which has spent $18.5 million on his behalf.
Sen. Cruz has acknowledged the need for additional investment from McConnell, asserting the continuous lack of support from national Democrats and the Washington establishment.
In a recent twist, Vice President Kamala Harris will join Allred for a rally in Houston, emphasizing their united front in this fierce contest. Featuring a performance by Beyonce, the event aims to galvanize support for Allred, who casts himself as a viable alternative to Cruz’s controversial tenure, particularly highlighting Cruz’s actions during pivotal moments such as the 2020 election objections and the historic Texas winter storm.
Texas voters are faced with a stark choice as November approaches: a continuation of Cruz’s conservative policies or a shift towards Allred’s promise of bipartisan, practical governance.
