In a recent development, investigators have revealed that a 28th victim has been identified in the tragic mass shooting that took place at a birthday party in Akron, Ohio. The shooting, which occurred last week, left one person dead and has prompted an intensive search for the suspects involved, as city officials announced on Monday.
Akron Police Chief Brian Harding disclosed during a news conference that the latest victim, initially believed to be a witness, had actually been grazed by a bullet. The 36-year-old woman had sought medical attention after the incident but did not ultimately receive treatment for her injuries. Chief Harding stated that investigators are diligently following up on leads and have received a substantial number of tips from the public.
While Chief Harding did not disclose any specific suspect information, initial reports stated that there were 25 victims, including the 27-year-old man who tragically lost his life. However, on Wednesday last week, the police updated the figure, indicating that 27 individuals had been struck by gunfire. The deceased victim was identified as LaTeris Cook. At the time, two victims were in critical condition, while the remaining 25 were stable or had been discharged from medical care.
The Akron shooting marks the 208th mass shooting in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The organization, like CNN, defines a mass shooting as an incident where four or more people, excluding the shooter(s), are injured.
Authorities responded swiftly to reports of shots fired and multiple victims shortly after midnight on June 2. The shooting took place at a large birthday party with approximately 200 attendees. Chief Harding had previously described the scene as consistent with drive-by gunfire.
Law enforcement officials recovered a staggering 45 shell casings believed to have been fired from at least five different firearms. Additionally, three handguns were found at the crime scene. Investigations suggest that at least one individual may have returned fire.
Various agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the U.S. Marshals, have jointly offered rewards of up to $22,500 for any information related to the case.
Furthermore, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik announced on Monday the creation of a gun violence response fund dedicated to aiding the victims of last week's shooting, as well as future victims. Mayor Malik emphasized that gun violence is a pressing issue in their community and pledged to make it a top priority for his administration.
As authorities tirelessly pursue leads, the community remains on edge, hoping for swift justice and an end to the senseless violence that has plagued their city.
