In a heartbreaking turn of events, a baby girl who was saved from her mother's womb after a fatal Israeli airstrike in Gaza has tragically passed away. CBS News has learned that Sabreen Erooh, the infant, died late Thursday at a beleaguered hospital in the war-torn Palestinian territory. This devastating loss comes less than a week after her mother, Sabreen al-Sakani, succumbed to her injuries.
Sabreen al-Sakani was only six months pregnant when she was fatally wounded by the Israeli airstrike on her home in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. Despite the doctors' frantic efforts to save both mother and baby, al-Sakani could not be saved. In a desperate attempt to give the unborn child a chance at life, doctors performed an emergency cesarean section. Although Sabreen Erooh was born prematurely, weighing just 3.1 pounds, her survival offered a glimmer of hope amidst the tragic circumstances.
Images of Sabreen Erooh's tiny, fragile body being rushed through the swaddled in a blanket, sparked international outrage and intensified condemnation of Israel's tactics in Gaza. The Hamas-run Ministry of Health claims that more than 34,000 people in Gaza, primarily women and children, have lost their lives in the ongoing conflict.
The loss of baby Sabreen has further highlighted the devastating toll that this conflict has taken on innocent lives, especially among the most vulnerable. Every 10 minutes, a child is killed or wounded in Gaza, as stated by the United Nations Human Rights chief, Volker Turk. The escalating number of civilian casualties, despite their protection under the laws of war, is a matter of grave concern.
The tiny girl, initially unnamed, had been labeled "The baby of the martyr Sabreen al-Sakani" on her arm before being given the name Sabreen Erooh, meaning "soul of Sabreen," by her aunt after her mother's passing. Despite being placed in an incubator, the premature infant's fight for survival was ultimately unsuccessful.
"This is beyond warfare," exclaimed Volker Turk. The international community continues to call for an end to the violence and for both sides to seek a peaceful resolution. Meanwhile, Israel's political leaders insist that their military operations are aimed at destroying Hamas, following the militant group's terror attack in October.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his commitment to a ground operation in Rafah, where more than 1 million Palestinians have sought refuge. However, calls for a more targeted approach and a warning against a full-scale ground offensive have been voiced by the United States and other Israeli allies and humanitarian organizations.
As the cycle of violence persists, innocent lives like that of Sabreen Erooh continue to be caught in its crossfire. The international community mourns the loss of this tiny, innocent soul and calls for an end to the ongoing conflict that has claimed far too many lives.
