### Colts Quarterback Anthony Richardson Sidelined Due to Shoulder Aggravation

In a blow to the Indianapolis Colts, quarterback Anthony Richardson is set to miss an indefinite period after re-injuring his right shoulder, which he initially hurt in 2023. This development puts a significant pause on the ongoing quarterback competition between Richardson and veteran Daniel Jones, said Colts head coach Shane Steichen on Thursday.

Richardson, who did not attend the three practice sessions this week, will also be absent from the next week's mandatory minicamp. Steichen was tight-lipped when asked if Richardson will be ready for the start of training camp on July 22, stressing that the quarterback needs rest and refusing to set any specific timeline for his return.

The new injury stems from Richardson alerting trainers about shoulder soreness after a practice last week, leading medical professionals to diagnose an aggravation of his AC joint. This joint was previously sprained five weeks into Richardson’s rookie season, an injury that required season-ending surgery. Despite the recurrence, surgery won't be necessary this time, though rest is paramount.

Richardson's quest to become the Colts' franchise quarterback has faced significant hurdles. Since being the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft, he has missed 17 games over two seasons due to various injuries. This includes 12 games from the original shoulder sprain, alongside other setbacks like an oblique/hip injury and back spasms. Last season also saw Richardson benched twice in favor of veteran Joe Flacco.

Coach Steichen revealed that before this recent injury, Richardson was making commendable progress, both in throwing and in meeting sessions. However, the nature and timing of this injury underscore its severity and the challenges it brings.

In response to Richardson's injury woes and performance struggles, the Colts signed Daniel Jones to a $14 million one-year contract to spur competition within their quarterback unit. Jones, a former first-round pick, failed to make a mark with the New York Giants but is now provided an opportunity to revive his career with the Colts.

As Richardson recuperates, Daniel Jones will take more reps, and rookie Riley Leonard, a sixth-round pick, will step into the No. 2 quarterback spot. No additional quarterback roster moves are planned at this moment, Steichen confirmed.

Reflecting on the broader strategy, general manager Chris Ballard emphasized the necessity of competition to enhance overall team performance. He also pointed out Richardson's struggle to consistently stay healthy over a 17-game season as a decisive factor in reinforcing the position. This forward-thinking approach now appears prudent with Richardson temporarily out of action again.
