An Illinois man has been arrested and charged with a hate crime after allegedly shooting his neighbor multiple times in what authorities believe to be a racially motivated incident. The shooting occurred at approximately 5:37 p.m. on Tuesday in Lockport Township, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement.
According to the Will County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to the scene after receiving reports of shots fired. Witnesses identified the alleged shooter as 70-year-old John P. Shadbar, who was seen walking around his property with a rifle after shooting the victim outside. Authorities stated that Shadbar fired multiple rounds at the 45-year-old woman from different locations outside.
The shocking incident was captured on security cameras in the area, providing crucial evidence for investigators. Deputies at the scene took immediate life-saving measures to assist the victim, who was then transported to the hospital in critical condition. Surgery was necessary to address gunshot wounds to her chest and hand, and she is currently in recovery.
The victim has been identified as Melissa Robertson, a white woman whose sons are Black. Family members shared with NBC Chicago that they had endured years of harassment from Shadbar, beginning shortly after they moved in a decade ago. In one incident, Shadbar allegedly directed racial slurs towards them, prompting an apology from him after intervention from Robertson. However, tensions remained high, with Shadbar reportedly engaging in other disturbing behaviors such as firing his gun in his yard and throwing fireworks between their homes.
Tuesday's harrowing ordeal took a terrifying turn when Shadbar attempted to gain access to the family's backyard, shouting racial epithets. Robertson's aunt, Jeanne Beyer, recounted the events and expressed deep concern for her family's well-being. Shockingly, Robertson's 8-year-old son was present and witnessed the entire shooting.
Following the incident, Shadbar barricaded himself inside his residence. However, after negotiations with a crisis negotiator, he eventually surrendered peacefully. During their conversation, Shadbar reportedly made several incriminating statements. He was subsequently taken into custody and charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, and a hate crime. Authorities have indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming.
The tragic incident has raised questions about the family's previous attempts to seek help from authorities regarding the ongoing harassment. They claim to have contacted officials multiple times over the years, but no action was taken. NBC News has reached out to the Will County Sheriff's Office for further comment on the matter.
As the investigation continues, the community is grappling with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence. The victim's son, Mikeal Johnson, expressed his anguish over the incident, stating that it should have never happened. He emphasized the impact not only on their lives but also on Shadbar's and that of their neighbors.
Shadbar made his initial court appearance on Thursday, where he was denied pretrial release. Authorities are determined to seek justice for Melissa Robertson and her family, while also addressing the larger systemic issues of racism and hate crimes in the community.
