In a targeted strike in Khan Yunis, Gaza, Rafa'a Salameh, the Commander of Hamas's Khan Yunis Brigade, was killed, according to the IDF and Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) on Sunday. The strike was conducted based on information from IDF intelligence and the Shin Bet.

Salameh, who was by the side of Izzadin al-Qassam Brigades chief Mohammed Deif, was killed during the operation. Sources confirmed that Salameh's body was recovered and buried immediately. However, there is no confirmation about Deif's fate at this time.

The IDF had struck the Al-Mawasi area in southern Gaza, targeting Deif and Salameh. Palestinian reports indicate that the strike resulted in numerous casualties. Salameh, known for his close association with Deif, played a significant role in the October 7 massacre in southern Israel and was involved in the abduction of IDF soldier Gilad Shalit.

Salameh had held various positions within Hamas, including Commander of Hamas's Khan Yunis Al Qarara Battalion and Commander of the Khan Yunis Brigade. During Operation Protective Edge in 2014, he was responsible for combat support and defensive plans. Additionally, Salameh oversaw the launch of projectiles into Israeli territory and the operation of terror tunnels from Khan Yunis that were later neutralized in Operation Guardian of the Walls in 2021.

The security establishment estimates that Deif, who was above ground during the strike, was likely killed. However, there has been no official confirmation. Deputy head of the Hamas political bureau, Khalil al-Hayya, mentioned that Deif laughed at the recent speech by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The IDF reported that the targeted complex belonged to Salameh and was registered in his name. The assessment within the IDF is that the elimination of Deif and Salameh will exert considerable pressure on Hamas.

The search for additional victims from the strike was halted at sunset and will resume in the morning. The situation remains tense as the IDF continues to monitor developments.
