In a pre-trial hearing on Friday, Hunter Biden, son of the president, pleaded not guilty to federal gun charges in the U.S. District Court for Delaware. The trial, presided over by Judge Maryellen Noreika, is now scheduled to commence on June 3.
Special Counsel David Weiss has charged Hunter Biden with multiple offenses, including making a false statement in the purchase of a firearm, making a false statement related to information required by a licensed firearm dealer, and possession of a firearm by an unlawful user of a controlled substance.
The indictment alleges that on October 12, 2018, Hunter Biden acquired a Coldt Cobra revolver and made a false written statement to deceive the dealer, certifying that he was not an unlawful user or addicted to any controlled substance. However, it is claimed that this statement was false, as Hunter Biden knowingly possessed the firearm while addicted to narcotics.
The case gained attention in 2021 when it was reported by Fox News that Hunter Biden's gun had been thrown into a trash can outside a market in Delaware in 2018. According to a police report from October 23, 2018, Hallie Biden, the widow of President Biden's late son Beau and Hunter's then-partner, disposed of the firearm. Hallie Biden could potentially be called as a witness during the trial.
In addition to the federal gun charges, Hunter Biden is also facing federal tax charges in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. He has pleaded not guilty to three felonies and six misdemeanors related to $1.4 million in owed taxes. The charges pertain to a four-year period, from January 2017 to October 2020, during which Hunter Biden allegedly evaded paying federal income taxes and filed false tax reports. The taxes have since been paid.
While the tax trial was initially set for June 20, Hunter Biden's attorneys successfully secured a delay. Judge Mark Scarsi granted their request and moved the trial to September 5, when jury selection will begin.
As the trials approach, all eyes will be on Hunter Biden as he faces legal proceedings on both federal gun charges and federal tax charges.
