In a whirlwind of diplomatic visits, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has come under fire from European Union (EU) officials for his recent actions. Orban's departure from the NATO summit in Washington, D.C., to meet with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida has raised concerns about his disregard for the duties of the EU presidency.
Orban, who assumed the role of president of the European Union for a six-month term, wasted no time in using his position to engage in discussions with various world leaders. Prior to his meeting with Trump, Orban held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
However, Orban's actions have sparked criticism from his European counterparts. EU officials have expressed their disapproval, with EU diplomat confirming that member states have significantly lowered their level of participation in the informal council meetings scheduled to be held in Hungary during its presidency term.
Furthermore, discussions have taken place amongst officials in various capitals on how to use EU treaties to limit Orban's impact. The diplomat argued that allowing Hungary to assume the role of the presidency was a mistake and that EU institutions should focus on protecting the unity of the Union, rather than Orban's perceived idea of unity.
Orban's visit to Russia has also raised eyebrows, prompting EU Foreign Policy chief Josep Borrell to emphasize that Orban has no mandate from the union in discussions with foreign leaders. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo described the visit as "disturbing," highlighting Orban's disregard for the duties of the EU presidency and the interests of the European Union.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis echoed similar sentiments, stating that Orban may be abusing the position of the EU presidency, but he certainly does not speak for any country except his own.
Orban's foreign visit blitz and his admiration for former U.S. President Trump have drawn attention and led to concerns about his leadership style and priorities. As the rest of Europe remains critical of his actions, Orban's presidency term becomes increasingly contentious.
While Orban's actions have created divisions within the EU, the focus remains on Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine and the future of the European Union. As the multi-day NATO summit celebrates its 75th anniversary, members continue to express concern about these pressing issues.
