Hewitt, also known for his support of former President Donald Trump, confirmed his resignation to Fox News on Friday after a contentious exchange during the Post's "First Look" show.

The incident occurred during a Friday morning discussion about Trump's potential plans to challenge the election results. Tension arose when Hewitt pointed out that a GOP voting lawsuit in Pennsylvania had been successful. Host Jonathan Capehart responded by criticizing Hewitt for often presenting factually unsupported claims. "I don't appreciate being lectured about reporting," Hewitt retorted before removing his earpiece and stating, "I won't come back, Jonathan, I'm done." He then abruptly exited the live broadcast, leaving Capehart and fellow guest Ruth Marcus visibly stunned.

Following the unexpected departure, Capehart attempted to continue the segment by directing a question to Marcus, whose video connection soon failed. The broadcast ended shortly thereafter. While Hewitt did not respond to POLITICO’s request for comment, he later confirmed his resignation to Fox News.

A spokesperson for The Washington Post did not directly address Hewitt's resignation but highlighted the purpose of their live journalism platform, stating that Washington Post Live is known for dynamic discussions and thought-provoking perspectives on current issues, such as those featured in the "First Look" program.

Hewitt, a former official in the Reagan administration turned conservative commentator, had been a contributing columnist at the Post since 2017. His history with Trump includes early clashes before Trump’s first presidential campaign, followed by a supportive relationship with the former president regularly appearing on Hewitt’s radio show.

This resignation is not an isolated event at The Washington Post during this election cycle. Recently, three members of the editorial board also left the newspaper after it announced it would cease issuing endorsements in presidential races. Conservatives have often criticized the Post's opinion team for its left-leaning bias, and Hewitt's departure has further fueled their discontent.

Conservative pundit Megyn Kelly took to X to defend Hewitt, describing him as "factual, sober, brave, and appropriately FED UP with these left-wing hacks posing as journalists."
