In a shocking incident, a 29-year-old mother from Houston, Texas, has been arrested and charged with abandoning her two young children while she embarked on a cruise vacation. According to court records, this is not the first time the mother, Lakesha Woods Williams, has left her children unattended.
The Harris County Precinct 5 Constable's Office received a welfare check request for Williams' luxury high-rise apartment in the Memorial City area on April 9, after concerned neighbors reported seeing the children alone. Authorities discovered the 6-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son inside the apartment, which was described as being in a state of disarray.
The children informed the deputies that they had been alone since April 4 and had no knowledge of when their mother would return. The apartment smelled of urine, and it appeared that the children had attempted to prepare food for themselves. Deputies also confiscated a webcam used by Williams to check in on her children and a phone through which the 8-year-old was communicating with her during her absence.
Investigation revealed that Williams had flown to Miami five days prior to boarding a cruise to Puerto Rico, leaving her children behind. When contacted by deputies, she was uncooperative and provided inconsistent information about her whereabouts.
Williams appeared before a magistrate on Friday, where her bond was set at $25,000 due to previous allegations of similar circumstances. If she posts bail, she will be required to wear a GPS ankle monitor and adhere to a curfew. The court also issued a protective order preventing Williams from contacting or being near her daughter and son.
Meanwhile, the children are now under the custody of Williams' sister. The court has scheduled her next hearing for April 15 at 9 a.m. before Judge Brian Warren.
Leaving young children unattended under such circumstances is a serious offense, and the authorities are determined to ensure the safety and well-being of the children involved. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible parenting and the potential legal consequences for neglecting the welfare of one's own children.
