In a show of dissent, House staffers are gathering on Capitol Hill Thursday afternoon to protest the chamber's override vote of President Joe Biden's halting of a shipment of arms to Israel. This protest, organized by "Congressional staff for a Ceasefire Now," aims to denounce the decision to send additional weapons to Israel despite mounting calls for a ceasefire.

An anonymous organizer, known only as "M," highlighted the need for protesters to protect their identities during the event. Staff members have been encouraged to wear masks, remove identifiable clothing, and hide their staff IDs to avoid being identified. The fear of identification and potential retaliation has made some staffers hesitant to participate, but the organizers hope that a significant number will demonstrate their bravery in standing up to their bosses.

The "Congressional staff for a Ceasefire Now" group claims to have more than 150 members who are congressional staffers. In a statement, the group stressed that they are responding to the demands of their constituents who are calling for an immediate ceasefire, increased humanitarian aid, and the release of all hostages. They criticize the Biden administration for continuing to send weapons to Israel while failing to commit to a meaningful freeze on future transfers.

To ensure the safety of protesters, the group has provided "protest safety tips" to help staffers hide their identity. Recommendations include hiding tattoos, wearing different shoes and clothes than usual, and disabling identifying phone settings.

The rally comes amidst ongoing pro-Palestinian protests, both on college campuses and nationwide, where demonstrators have also sought ways to conceal their identities. These actions reflect the growing support for the Palestinian cause and opposition to the Israeli assault on Gaza.

The protest is scheduled to commence at 4:10 p.m. at the "base of the House steps." As concerns mount regarding the escalation of violence and the plight of Palestinian civilians in Gaza, the staffers' demand for an end to U.S. support for Israel's assault on civilians resonates with the sentiments of many Americans.

It remains to be seen how Congress and the Biden administration will respond to the calls for a ceasefire and reassessment of U.S. support for Israel's actions.
