The subpoena seeks to connect Governor Walz to the wrongdoing and demands records that illustrate "the extent of your responsibilities and actions addressing the massive fraud that resulted in the abuse of taxpayer dollars intended for hungry children." This recent development comes as House Republicans pivot their efforts towards targeting the new Democratic ticket following months of investigations and attacks on President Biden.

While the Minnesota Education Department, which oversaw the child nutrition program, has been cooperating with the committee and providing relevant documents, it is worth noting that the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which funded the pandemic-era program, failed to act on the state's repeated warnings about the fraud scheme during the previous administration.

The fraud scheme, initially uncovered by The New York Times in March 2022, led to the indictment of 48 individuals by the Justice Department two years ago.
