In a recent interview with The New York Times, Hillary Clinton expressed her disappointment with fellow Democrats for their failure to protect abortion rights leading up to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. The former Democratic presidential candidate accused her party of underestimating the strength of the pro-life movement, ultimately resulting in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision.
Clinton stated that Democrats didn't take the threat seriously and failed to pass legislation to solidify abortion rights into federal law, even when they controlled the Senate. She lamented the lack of organization and funding on the Democrats' side compared to influential institutions like The Federalist Society, which supports conservative causes.
The former Secretary of State commended the right-wing movement for their relentless determination, acknowledging their ability to regroup and raise funds after facing setbacks. Clinton noted that Republicans have maintained a strong and well-funded presence while Democrats lacked a comparable force.
Highlighting her foresight, Clinton recalled being dismissed as alarmist in 2016 when she predicted that a Trump presidency would jeopardize abortion rights. She warned that if the right-wing forces continue to prevail, the future of the country would be governed by a small minority that aims to roll back progress for women.
This interview follows former President Trump's recent statement, where he pledged to not advocate for restrictions on birth control and reiterated his support for exceptions in cases of rape, incest, and the life of the mother. President Biden and his re-election campaign have accused Trump of supporting a nationwide abortion ban and imposing restrictions on contraception.
The issue of abortion has become a significant concern for various demographic groups, according to the latest Fox News Poll. It found that self-described Democrats, suburban women, self-described very liberals, Black voters, those with a college degree, and voters under 30 all consider abortion their top concern.
As the debate around reproductive rights continues to intensify, Hillary Clinton's criticism of her party and praise for Republican persistence shed light on the challenges faced by Democrats in protecting and advancing abortion rights.
