Both teams have shown formidable performances in past games, making this clash one of the most anticipated matchups of the season.
Ohio State's offensive line faces perhaps its toughest challenge yet with Michigan boasting an exceptional defensive tackle tandem in Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant, weighing in at 320 and 340 pounds, respectively. Additionally, defensive end Josaiah Stewart, who is tied for second in the Big Ten with 8.5 sacks in 2024, poses a significant threat. Ohio State's offensive line has already been battle-tested this season, stepping up exceptionally well despite losing two of its best starters, Josh Simmons and Seth McLaughlin, to season-ending injuries. Their performance has been crucial in overcoming both Penn State and Indiana.
"Our O-line knows that they have a challenge," said Coach Howard. "But, every week they've faced challenges and have risen to the occasion. I'm incredibly proud of their response."
The loss against now No. 1 ranked Oregon had cast doubt on Coach Ryan Day's ability to win against top-five opponents, but since then, he's managed to rectify those concerns substantially, winning two top-five matchups. Day's willingness to adapt, including bringing in Chip Kelly to run the offense and his increased involvement in defensive and special teams meetings, has paid dividends.
"Experiencing the loss to Michigan was one of the worst moments of my career," Day expressed passionately on 10TV's Game Time with Ryan Day. "We can never let that happen again, and that mindset has driven us all season."
On the defensive end, Ohio State's Jack Sawyer, a homegrown talent from Columbus, has had an impressive season, particularly in the last few games. He has recorded 42 tackles and 4.5 sacks, with a notable surge in the final stretch of the previous season.
"Every year, our matchup with Michigan is a war, no matter our records," said Sawyer. "This game is incredibly important, and I'm excited for it."
Michigan's tight end, Colston Loveland, has also been a key player, leading his team in all major receiving categories with 56 receptions for 582 yards and five touchdowns. Ohio State's defense, however, has substantial experience in countering high-caliber tight ends, having successfully curtailed top players from Oregon, Penn State, and Purdue.
As Ohio State prepares to host Michigan, the importance of this game is palpable. Despite Michigan's 6-5 record, Ohio State players are united in the belief that the rivalry's stakes remain sky-high.
"Nope. Not at all," responded wide receiver Emeka Egbuka when asked if Michigan's record diminishes the game's significance.
The game's outcome will likely impact not only state pride but also potential playoff positioning for the Buckeyes. The Senior Day ceremony, recognizing Ohio State's senior players, will add an emotional layer to what is already expected to be a fiercely competitive showdown.
