Bethel Park High School, the alma mater of the gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump, has issued a statement refuting claims made by former schoolmates that the shooter was a victim of relentless bullying. The school, located in Pennsylvania, stated that it had no evidence to support the allegations of bullying or that the rifle team rejected him due to his poor aim.
The statement released by Bethel Park High School over the weekend stopped short of disproving the recollections of the shooter's former schoolmates. The incident took place on July 13 when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks climbed atop a bottle manufacturing plant in Butler County, Pennsylvania, and attempted to shoot Trump with a rifle during a nearby rally.
The US Secret Service sniper swiftly neutralized Crooks, who had wounded Trump's ear in the assassination attempt. Sadly, one rally-goer lost their life, while two others sustained injuries. The shocking incident brought Crooks' life under global scrutiny, prompting several of his schoolmates to come forward and share their memories of him.
One former schoolmate, Jason Kohler, described Crooks as a loner who was often derided by his peers for his choice of attire, which included hunting and military clothes. Kohler stated that Crooks ate alone at lunch and was subjected to constant bullying. Another schoolmate, Jameson Myers, revealed that Crooks failed to secure a spot on the school rifle team due to his poor marksmanship, which proved relevant given his role in the assassination attempt.
However, Bethel Park High School's statement contradicted these claims, stating that their records showed Crooks excelled academically, attended school regularly without any disciplinary incidents related to bullying. The school described Crooks as a quiet and bright student who got along well with both teachers and classmates. They also mentioned that the school coach did not recall meeting Crooks and had no record of his involvement with the team.
Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the Trump rally shooting. However, they have discovered that Crooks purchased ammunition on the day of the shooting and utilized a camera-equipped drone to survey the rally site.
Bethel Park High School's denial of the bullying claims raises questions about the possible factors that led to the attempted assassination. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on determining the true motives and uncovering any other potential factors that may have influenced Crooks' actions.
