The U.S. Army has released its long-anticipated report regarding Donald Trump's contentious visit to Arlington National Cemetery in August. However, the heavily redacted document offers little new information about the alleged altercation that took place between a cemetery official and Trump campaign staff members.
This release came in response to a court order following a lawsuit by American Oversight, a government transparency organization. The report, which includes significant redactions, describes a "simple assault" incident but omits specific details. According to the document, while working at Arlington National Cemetery, a cemetery staff member made physical contact with another individual while attempting to move past them. No medical attention was required on the scene, and the involved party later declined to press charges.
The Army has stated that the law enforcement investigation into the incident remains ongoing, and therefore, further information is currently unavailable. The Trump campaign has not yet provided a response to NBC News' request for comment regarding the report.
The incident first came to light in late August during Trump’s participation in a wreath-laying ceremony at the cemetery. NPR reported that a confrontation occurred when a cemetery employee attempted to prevent the Trump campaign from filming and photographing the visit, an activity prohibited by federal law within military cemeteries.
Following the incident, the cemetery employee filed a report with military police but chose not to pursue charges. The Army initially considered the matter closed, but news of the incident provoked public backlash against Trump due to his history of controversial remarks about service members. In response to the claims, a campaign spokesperson denied any physical altercation and indicated readiness to release footage, though no such footage has been made public.
Trump, countering the criticism, accused cemetery employees of engaging in a smear campaign against him. Despite the ongoing investigation, the heavily redacted report leaves many questions about the incident unanswered.
