### GOP Plans Major Overhaul of Obamacare if Trump Re-Elected, Says House Speaker
House Speaker Mike Johnson revealed plans for significant reforms to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) if Donald Trump secures a second term. Speaking to supporters in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Johnson emphasized that rolling back the 14-year-old healthcare law would be a top priority for Republicans in the initial 100 days of a new Trump administration.
During the event, held at Trump’s volunteer headquarters, Johnson confidently assured attendees that the future Republican agenda would exclude Obamacare. This declaration came in response to a direct question from the audience, affirming the party's long-standing opposition to the ACA.
Johnson’s comments come at an important juncture as both parties present their final arguments to voters. The GOP has a history of critiquing the ACA, highlighted by their failed attempt to repeal parts of it in 2017 due to opposition from the late Sen. John McCain. Since then, health policy has taken a backseat to other Republican priorities like tax reform. However, Johnson's recent statements indicate that the GOP remains committed to revisiting healthcare reform.
In his third visit to the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania, aimed at supporting GOP challenger Ryan Mackenzie, Johnson emphasized the need for substantial changes to the ACA. He mentioned that a group of Republican physicians, the GOP Doctors Caucus, is already working on new legislative proposals, though he did not provide specific details.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries responded to Johnson’s remarks during a campaign stop in Michigan, highlighting the Republican agenda as a threat to the ACA. He drew parallels to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, suggesting that if that landmark decision could be reversed, the ACA could also be at risk.
Despite its contentious history, some provisions of the ACA, such as protections for people with pre-existing conditions, have gained popularity over time. This has tempered the ACA’s role as a central issue in the 2024 campaign. Even Trump has adopted a different tone from previous campaigns, stating in a video on Truth Social that he intends to strengthen rather than terminate the ACA.
Nonetheless, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has warned that the protections provided by Obamacare are at stake if Trump wins re-election. The unfolding political discourse underscores the continued divisiveness surrounding healthcare reform as a pivotal topic in American politics.
