In a tragic series of events early Sunday morning, three people lost their lives in two horrific crashes on the interstate in Colorado Springs. The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) reported that one of the deceased was a good Samaritan who was struck and killed while trying to assist the other two victims.
The chain of devastating events began at around 4:45 a.m. when authorities received an alert about a driver headed the wrong way on northbound I-25. As police were responding to this distressing situation, multiple 911 calls came in, notifying them of a head-on collision near the MLK Bypass exit (139).
Northbound lanes at Martin Luther King Bypass were shut down as the Colorado Springs Fire crews arrived at the scene of the "working-trapped" traffic accident. According to a CSPD lieutenant, a citizen stopped their vehicle and got out to render aid to those involved in the collision. However, tragedy struck again when the well-intentioned Samaritan attempted to cross the interstate and was struck by another northbound vehicle.
An eyewitness told 11 News that there were several vehicles with hazard lights on, indicating their presence at the crash site. The Samaritan ran across the interstate, but the oncoming vehicle appeared to be unaware of the incident and failed to slow down, resulting in a collision with the victim. Please note that these details have yet to be confirmed by the police.
Authorities stated that the other two victims were both involved in the initial wrong-way crash. Despite the prompt response from CSPD and CSFD, both the pedestrian and one driver were pronounced dead at the scene. The wrong-way driver was transported to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to their injuries upon arrival.
Northbound lanes on I-25 were reopened just before 10 a.m., bringing some relief to the affected commuters. It is worth mentioning that there was an earlier confusion regarding the location of the crash, with officials originally reporting it to be at I-25 and Circle. However, our crew at the scene confirmed that the crash occurred closer to the MLK Bypass.
This devastating incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by wrong-way drivers and the risks faced by good Samaritans attempting to help those in need. The CSPD continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding these tragic crashes in Colorado Springs, conveying their condolences to the victims' families and urging drivers to remain vigilant on the roads.
