GM's Extensive Recall: Nearly 462,000 Vehicles at Risk of Rear Wheel Lock-Up Issue

The recall primarily affects certain models in the U.S., specifically the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks manufactured between 2020 and 2022. Also impacted are the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon, and Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban.
According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from a transmission control valve that may wear down over time. In exceptional cases, this could result in the rear wheels locking up. Prior to any wheel lock issues, drivers might experience harsh shifting from their vehicles.
GM plans to mitigate the problem by having dealerships install new software for the transmission control. This updated software will closely monitor the valve's condition, detecting excessive wear up to 10,000 miles before any critical issues arise. If excessive wear is detected, the software will restrict the transmission to fifth gear, thus avoiding a complete lockup during downshifts from eighth gear.
The company assured warranty coverage for those vehicles that show signs of having a faulty transmission control valve. Owners of the affected models will be formally notified through letters scheduled to be sent out on December 9.
In January, GM engaged United States safety regulators after receiving an owner’s complaint regarding the issue. The company initiated an investigation in July and by September, found 1,888 reports potentially related to the wheel lockup condition. Among these incidents, there were 11 cases where vehicles veered off the road, leading to minor property damage in some instances. Additionally, three minor injuries were reported, but GM clarified that these injuries were not linked to any crashes.
