In a recent poll conducted by the Pew Research Center, it was found that people in 34 countries worldwide have greater confidence in President Joe Biden compared to his challenger in the 2020 election, former President Donald Trump. The survey also highlighted a growing skepticism towards the United States' democratic system as a model for other nations to follow.
Out of the surveyed countries, a median of 43% expressed trust in President Biden's ability to make the right decisions in world affairs, while only 28% placed the same level of confidence in Trump. Biden received a more positive assessment than his predecessor in 24 countries. However, Trump led in Hungary and Tunisia, and the two leaders were effectively tied in eight other countries.
Despite the confidence in Biden, there is a diminishing faith in U.S. democracy. While a median of 54% across the 34 countries still holds positive views of the United States, a median of 40% of respondents stated that the U.S. democracy used to be a good example for other nations, but it no longer serves as a model. In fact, 22% believed that U.S. democracy has never been an exemplary system, while only 21% still considered it as such.
The decline in faith towards U.S. democracy is primarily observed in European countries, with eight nations reporting a decrease since the spring of 2021. Richard Wike, the director of global attitudes research for Pew, noted that people perceive the U.S. political system as deeply divided along partisan lines, which contributes to the lack of confidence in its functionality.
Comparing Trump and Biden's ratings in global confidence, Biden's approval has dropped since his first year in office but remains significantly higher than that of Trump. Biden's lowest ratings were related to his handling of the Israel-Hamas war, with a median of 57% expressing no confidence in his approach. However, his highest ratings were observed in European nations, particularly regarding his management of the war in Ukraine.
Among the five leaders included in the survey, French President Emmanuel Macron obtained the highest level of confidence, slightly surpassing President Biden. On the other end, Russian President Vladimir Putin received the lowest level of confidence.
Interestingly, while confidence in Biden has dwindled in countries spanning South Africa, Israel, and the United Kingdom, it still remains consistently higher than that in Trump. Trump's poorest assessments were observed in Europe, where more than eight in 10 adults in France, Germany, and Sweden expressed no confidence in him. Similarly, Latin America portrayed low levels of confidence in Trump. However, Africa, which generally holds positive views towards U.S. presidents, registered some of Trump's best numbers.
It is noteworthy that even in the two countries where Trump garnered more confidence than Biden, the support for the former president was still lackluster. In Tunisia, for instance, only 17% expressed confidence in Trump, while in Hungary, where Trump has embraced the autocratic prime minister Viktor Orbán, only 37% displayed confidence in him.
In conclusion, the global poll conducted by the Pew Research Center highlights the higher level of confidence placed in President Joe Biden in comparison to his predecessor, Donald Trump. However, it also uncovers a growing skepticism towards the United States' democratic system as a model for other nations to follow. As the world continues to observe the dynamics of the current administration, it remains to be seen how perceptions and confidence may change in the coming years.
