A massive sinkhole has opened up at a soccer complex in southern Illinois, swallowing a large light pole and creating a cavernous chasm above an underground limestone mine. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.
The sinkhole, estimated to be at least 100 feet wide and up to 50 feet deep, formed suddenly on Wednesday morning at the Gordon Moore Park in Alton. Security footage captured the moment when a soccer field light pole, benches, and artificial turf disappeared into the ground.
Alton Mayor David Goins expressed relief that nobody was on the field at the time, emphasizing the importance of safety. The affected area has been cordoned off, and the park, along with surrounding roads, will remain closed indefinitely.
New Frontier Materials Bluff City, the company operating the underground limestone mine approximately 170 feet below ground, acknowledged that the sinkhole was the result of "surface subsidence." The collapse has been reported to the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration, as required.
Matt Barkett, spokesman for New Frontier Materials Bluff City, assured that the impacted area has been secured and will be off-limits while experts examine the mine and start repairs. The company is committed to working with the city to address the issue swiftly and ensure minimal impact on the community.
Michael Haynes, Alton's parks and recreation director, stated that engineers and geologists would be involved in assessing the stability of the ground and its surrounding areas. The process of determining a fix for the sinkhole is still unclear.
The incident serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers associated with underground mining. As investigations continue, the community awaits further updates on the stability of the soccer field and the future of the limestone mine.
Fortunately, this sinkhole event ended without any casualties, allowing authorities to focus on the necessary precautions and repairs needed to ensure the safety of the residents and visitors in Alton.
