In a significant move, Germany's Interior Ministry has taken action to ban the Islamic Centre Hamburg (IZH) and its subsidiary organizations due to their pursuit of radical Islamist goals and promotion of extremism. The ministry's decision comes after 53 premises linked to the association were searched across eight German states early on Wednesday, following a court order.
Among the banned organizations are the IZH's subgroups in Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin, in addition to the main association based in Hamburg. As a result of this ban, four Shiite mosques will be closed, according to the ministry.
The Interior Ministry based its decision on evidence gathered during a search conducted in November, in which 55 properties were investigated. The Islamisches Zentrum Hamburg, known for its iconic turquoise exterior, has been found to promote an Islamist-extremist and totalitarian ideology that goes against human dignity, women's rights, an independent judiciary, and Germany's democratic values, according to Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.
Minister Faeser emphasized that the ban should not be misconstrued as targeting the peaceful practice of the Shiite religion. She made it clear that the objective is to combat the specific extremist ideology espoused by the IZH.
The ministry's statement outlined that the Islamic Centre Hamburg acted as a direct representative of Iran's Supreme Leader and aimed to bring about an Islamic revolution in Germany, ultimately seeking theocratic rule. The association was also found to be endorsing antisemitism and supporting the Iran-backed terrorist group, Hezbollah, which has also been banned.
The ban on the Islamic Centre Hamburg and its subsidiary organizations underlines the German government's unwavering commitment to uphold the principles of democracy, protect human rights, and counter extremism. This decisive action sends a strong message that such organizations will face consequences for their alleged involvement in radical ideologies that threaten peace, harmony, and inclusivity within German society.
The Interior Ministry's action is part of ongoing efforts to prevent the spread of extremist ideologies and safeguard the country against potential security risks. The ban also reflects Germany's determination to maintain a vibrant and diverse society while preserving the values that form its foundation.
As further investigations continue, the banned entities and their affiliated properties will be closely monitored to ensure compliance with the ban and prevent any potential resurgence of radicalism.
