The decision was announced by head coach Kirby Smart on Thursday, marking the permanent removal of Thomas from the football program.
Thomas, a junior, was arrested on Friday on felony charges of cruelty to children and misdemeanor battery charges. The university initially suspended him indefinitely, but the recent decision by Coach Smart confirms that Thomas will no longer be a part of the team.
Coach Smart had a face-to-face meeting with Thomas on Tuesday to deliver the news. "I had a chance to sit down and meet with him face to face on Tuesday, which I think was really important to let him know he can no longer be a part of the football team," Smart stated. He also expressed his well-wishes for Thomas's future endeavors.
This is not the first brush with the law for Thomas. In 2023, he was arrested by University of Georgia police on charges of false imprisonment and family violence battery, but the charges were dropped after he entered a pretrial diversion program.
With Thomas's dismissal, Georgia loses an experienced target for quarterback Carson Beck. Thomas had an impressive season last year, racking up 23 catches for 383 yards and a touchdown. He was counted as one of the team's leading returning targets.
Despite this setback, the Georgia Bulldogs remain strong contenders in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). They were voted as favorites to win the league during the SEC media days on July 19. The team boasts six preseason first-team All-SEC picks, including Beck, running back Trevor Etienne, offensive lineman Tate Ratledge, defensive lineman Nazir Stackhouse, linebacker Mykel Williams, and defensive back Malaki Starks.
With the loss of Thomas, the Bulldogs will have to rely on other wide receivers to step up. Dominic Lovett and Arian Smith, both seniors, provide veteran experience in the receiving corps. However, Coach Smart acknowledged the need to develop more contributors in that position.
In addition to the dismissal of Thomas, Coach Smart has also addressed the issue of driving offenses among his players. The team has had numerous driving-related violations, including DUI, reckless driving, and speeding. The collective providing name, image, and likeness payments to the athletes has imposed suspensions and fines as a consequence.
The Georgia football program has faced tragedy before, as it mourned the loss of offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy in a car crash in January 2023, shortly after winning the national title game.
As Georgia prepares for the upcoming season, the team will need to regroup and focus on their remaining talent and the strong foundation built by Coach Smart. The loss of Rara Thomas will be felt, but the Bulldogs are determined to overcome this setback and continue their pursuit of success on the field.
