A funeral was held today for 16-year-old Palestinian girl, Lujain Musleh, who was reportedly killed by Israeli forces during a wide-scale operation in the occupied West Bank. The incident occurred on the seventh day of the Israeli operation, when soldiers surrounded a neighboring house in Kafr Dan, just outside Jenin.
According to Lujain's father, she was shot in the head while looking out of a window of her home. The Israeli military claims that armed fighters fired at the soldiers, prompting them to "fire back at a suspect who observed" them. The Palestinian health ministry has reported that a total of 30 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the Israeli operation, with several children among the victims.
The situation in the West Bank has escalated since the recent attack by Hamas on Israel, followed by the war in Gaza. Defence for Children Palestine (DCIP), a rights group, has accused Israeli soldiers of entering Kafr Dan and firing live ammunition and shells indiscriminately. They allege that Lujain was shot by an Israeli sniper through a window, despite only looking out at the time.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have stated that soldiers surrounded two civilian structures in Kafr Dan where they believed armed fighters were hiding. They claim to have called for civilians to evacuate before engaging in an exchange of fire. The IDF has promised to review the incident involving Lujain and a 14-year-old boy named Mohammed Kanaan, who was reportedly shot dead by an Israeli sniper at the entrance of the Tulkarm refugee camp.
Pictures from Lujain's funeral showed mourners carrying her body wrapped in a Hamas flag, which is a common practice even for those who may not have been supporters of the movement. The IDF has emphasized that its forces operate in accordance with international law and deny deliberately targeting civilians.
The IDF has reported that in addition to the fatalities, two armed fighters were killed during an exchange of fire in Tulkarm, and an explosive device was discovered in a baby stroller. The ongoing operation has resulted in the deaths of 14 "terrorists" in Jenin, with 25 suspects detained. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has reiterated the need to eliminate terrorists, either through arrest or elimination, and has called for full mobilization of forces.
Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa expressed concern over the extensive losses caused by the Israeli raids, particularly the damage to infrastructure. The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees has also voiced alarm about the situation in Jenin, citing violence and destruction that has left streets impassable and shops destroyed.
The Israeli military has stated that the operation targets terrorists who exploit the civilian population in the West Bank, using them as human shields and establishing terrorist infrastructures. They pledge to assist local authorities in quickly repairing damaged infrastructure and restoring essential services. Throughout the operation, Israeli forces have maintained a presence at Jenin's government hospital.
As tensions mount in the region, the international community continues to monitor the situation closely, seeking a resolution to the ongoing conflict and calling for the protection of civilian lives.
