A 689-foot bulk carrier, the Michipicoten, encountered a mishap in Lake Superior on Saturday morning, resulting in water ingress and the evacuation of part of its crew. The incident occurred southwest of Isle Royale around 7 a.m., prompting the vessel to notify the U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes sector about the flooding.
In response to the distress call, half of the 22-person crew was safely evacuated by the Coast Guard as a precautionary measure. To mitigate the situation, pumps onboard the Michipicoten were activated, successfully reducing the list of the vessel. Currently, the freighter is en route to a nearby port for further inspection to determine the cause of the flooding and assess the extent of the damages.
According to the live shipping map on Marine Traffic, the Michipicoten is headed towards the Thunder Bay port in Ontario, Canada. The bulk carrier Edwin H. Gott is reported to be alongside the vessel, providing assistance during the incident. The U.S. Coast Guard, Border Patrol, and National Park Service vessels are actively involved in the ongoing operation.
