In a disturbing incident that has drawn comparisons to the tragic death of George Floyd, a fourth hotel worker has been taken into custody in connection with the death of D'Vontaye Mitchell. The incident occurred at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Milwaukee on June 30, where Mitchell tragically lost his life after being forcefully restrained by hotel staff.
The latest arrest came on Friday as Herbert Williamson, a bellhop at the hotel, was apprehended following the issuance of charges by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office. Williamson, along with three other co-defendants, faces charges of being a party to felony murder in Mitchell's death. The three other defendants, identified as Devin Johnson-Carson, Todd Erickson, and Brandon Turner, were taken into custody the previous day.
Devin Johnson-Carson had been employed at the hotel's front desk, while Todd Erickson served as the security manager on duty during the altercation. The video evidence examined by prosecutors revealed the four hotel workers piling on top of Mitchell in their attempts to remove him from the hotel lobby, resulting in his untimely demise.
Each of the accused now faces the possibility of up to 15 years and nine months in prison if convicted. Aimbridge Hospitality, the company managing the hotel, expressed deep remorse and promptly terminated several employees engaged in Mitchell's death. "We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones," the company stated.
The racial dynamics of the case have further raised concerns, as Mitchell's family's attorneys have likened the incident to the widely-publicized murder of George Floyd. Mitchell's family is being represented by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who claimed that a bystander's video circulating on social media depicts security guards restraining Mitchell with their knees on his back and neck.
According to the criminal complaint, the sequence of events unfolded when Mitchell entered a women's bathroom in the hotel on June 30. An employee promptly dragged him outside, where he was restrained for an alarming eight or nine minutes while gasping for breath. The county medical examiner's report concluded that Mitchell's cause of death was attributed to "restraint asphyxia" exacerbated by toxic effects of cocaine and methamphetamine.
As the investigation continues, Todd Erickson and Brandon Turner have already made their initial court appearances and are being held on cash bonds of $50,000 and $30,000 respectively. Preliminary hearings for both defendants have been scheduled for August 19. Devin Johnson-Carson's initial court hearing was scheduled for Friday, while no specific court date was listed for Herbert Williamson.
At present, all four defendants remain in custody. There has been no immediate response from Todd Erickson's attorney, while Matt Last, the lawyer representing Brandon Turner, expressed disappointment with the District Attorney's decision to charge his client with felony murder. Last stated that they would work vigorously to prove Turner's innocence.
