Charlie Colin, the founding bassist of the popular pop-rock band Train, has tragically passed away at the age of 58. The news of Colin's death has left fans of the band mourning the loss of a talented musician.
Colin played a pivotal role in the formation of Train, alongside lead singer Pat Monahan, Rob Hotchkiss, Jimmy Stafford, and Scott Underwood in the 1990s. Together, they created a sound that resonated with audiences worldwide.
During his time with Train, Colin contributed to the recording of hits like "Drops of Jupiter," which climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. This song not only earned the band its first Grammy nominations for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group and Record of the Year but also captured the hearts of millions with its memorable lyrics and infectious melody. Another notable hit involving Colin was "Meet Virginia."
Colin's musical journey began in Newport Beach, where he met Rob Hotchkiss during their middle school years. Although they later attended Boston's Berklee College of Music at different times, fate brought them back together when Hotchkiss formed the band, the Apostles. After the Apostles disbanded, Hotchkiss connected with Pat Monahan in the Bay Area, and the two began writing songs together. It was during this time that Stafford and Colin were invited to join their musical lineup, followed by Underwood on the drums, solidifying the birth of Train.
In 2003, due to personal struggles with substance abuse, Colin made the difficult decision to leave Train. Despite his departure, his contributions to the band's success and unique sound remain cherished by fans.
In 2015, Colin teamed up with Hotchkiss and Underwood once again, along with Tom Luce, to form the band Painbirds. Their musical collaboration brought Colin back to the stage, showcasing his talent and passion for creating music.
Charlie Colin's untimely death marks the end of an era for Train and the music industry as a whole. His impact on the band's early success and his unforgettable bass lines will continue to resonate with fans for years to come.
