Former Hawaii state lawmaker and Marine Corps veteran, Bob McDermott, has secured victory in the Republican Senate primary, as reported by the Associated Press. McDermott's initial foray into politics saw him win a seat in the Hawaii House of Representatives by a narrow margin of approximately 150 votes, according to his campaign website. Notably, McDermott was the sole candidate endorsed on the Senate GOP campaign arm's website, highlighting his prominence within the party.
Despite limitations in campaign funds, with just under $2,500 in individual contributions as of July and around $10 cash on hand, McDermott is gearing up for the general election. The primary contest featured a crowded field with candidates who ran relatively low-profile campaigns, in contrast to the prominent backing received by incumbent Democratic Senator Mazie Hirono.
Senator Hirono, seeking a third term after her initial election in 2012, is considered the favorite to win Hawaii's general election later this year. Her campaign for the 2024 elections has already accumulated over $3 million in individual donations, further solidifying her position. Senator Hirono enters the general election with a substantial cash balance of more than $2.3 million, reflecting her strong financial standing.
Prior to her tenure in the Senate, Hirono served as lieutenant governor of Hawaii and held three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. As Democrats aim to retain their slim majority in the Senate, a victory for Hirono in the upcoming general election would greatly boost their prospects. The fully Democratic Hawaii congressional delegation, consisting of two senators and two House members, already underscores the party's strong presence in the state's political landscape. Democrats also maintain control over the governor's office and both chambers of the legislature in Hawaii.
As the race for the Hawaii Senate seat intensifies, all eyes are now on McDermott as the Republican contender seeking to make an impact in a traditionally blue state. With Senator Hirono's formidable campaign and substantial financial resources, the outcome of the general election will likely shape the future of Hawaii's representation in the Senate.
