In a surprising turn of events, former U.S. President Donald Trump has been proclaimed as the key to resolving the ongoing war in Ukraine by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Orbán made the announcement following a meeting with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
Expressing his gratitude for the meeting, Orbán stated, "It was an honor to visit President Trump today. We discussed ways to make peace. The good news of the day: he's going to solve it!" This declaration indicates that Orbán believes Trump possesses the capability to put an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
In agreement with Orbán's sentiment, Trump took to his platform, Truth Social, to voice his support for peace. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "There must be peace, and quickly. Too many people have died in a war that should have never started!"
Orbán's peace mission has taken him to various global capitals, including Kyiv, Moscow, Beijing, and now Palm Beach, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese ruler Xi Jinping, and Trump. However, it is worth noting that Ukraine has not sought Orbán's assistance, instead focusing on their own peace plan and urging for international condemnation and consequences for Russia's invasion, which has already endured for nearly two and a half years.
Zelenskyy, while addressing Orbán's peace initiatives, expressed his reservations, stating, "With all due respect to all countries, big and small, we have to say that not all leaders can negotiate. You need to have certain powers and strength for this." This suggests that Ukraine may not view Orbán as the most capable mediator in the conflict.
Despite holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, Orbán's role does not grant him special diplomatic status to intervene in the Ukraine crisis. Nevertheless, he has leveraged this position to actively pursue peace initiatives, including exploring the Chinese plan, which proposes freezing the conflict and withholding financial aid to Ukraine.
Recently, Orbán met with Putin and Xi before heading to Washington to attend a NATO summit commemorating the alliance's 75th anniversary. Meanwhile, Trump, who is currently surpassing incumbent President Joe Biden in polls for the upcoming election, has repeatedly asserted his intention to end the war swiftly.
As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, the international community closely watches Trump's involvement and Orbán's efforts to bring about a resolution to the conflict. Only time will tell if their claims to end the war will materialize into tangible actions and outcomes.
