In a shocking turn of events, former New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Officer Jeffrey Vappie has been indicted on eight counts by federal prosecutors. The indictment alleges an affair between Vappie and Mayor LaToya Cantrell, as well as an attempt to influence then-interim Police Chief Michelle Woodfork.
The indictment specifically points out a decision made by Woodfork on June 15, 2023, to uphold discipline against Vappie for issues related to his timesheets while serving on the mayor's security detail. After a disciplinary hearing, Vappie allegedly contacted Woodfork, urging her to exonerate him and referring to it as her "opportunity to make it right."
Further details from the indictment reveal that Vappie was "present for, and participated in" a meeting on September 11, during which Mayor Cantrell informed Woodfork that she would not be chosen as the permanent police chief. It remains unclear why Vappie was present at the meeting.
Vappie's lawyer, Harry Rosenberg, declined to comment on the allegations, as did Cantrell's lawyer, Eddie Castaing. Michelle Woodfork, now working for Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams, stated that she is unable to comment due to the ongoing investigation.
Woodfork, who previously held the interim police chief position for almost a year, was later demoted when Anne Kirkpatrick was selected as the current NOPD Superintendent. Despite some dissent among elected leaders, Kirkpatrick's nomination was ultimately confirmed by the City Council.
According to the federal indictment, Vappie tried to "mitigate Woodfork's disappointment" by inviting her to a daiquiri shop for a discussion. However, Woodfork announced her retirement from the force in February, while Vappie retired from the NOPD a few weeks ago.
The new indictment against Jeffrey Vappie adds even more intrigue to the already complex situation involving the former officer, Mayor Cantrell, and Michelle Woodfork. As the investigation continues, the city of New Orleans awaits further developments and possible consequences for those involved.
