Former MLB Pitcher Patrick Mahomes Sr. Pleads Guilty to Third DWI Charge

In a recent court hearing in Smith County, Texas, Patrick Mahomes Sr., a former MLB pitcher and father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) 3rd Or More. Court records reveal that the 54-year-old agreed to a sentence of five years' probation, with the first year being subjected to "intense" supervision.

The guilty plea came on the same day Mahomes Sr. was set to face a jury trial in Smith County. His formal sentencing is scheduled for September 23. Mahomes Sr.'s attorney, Joseph D. Murphy, stated that his client is currently leading a sober life and believes that the positive changes made by Mahomes Sr. contributed to the plea recommendation for probation.

Mahomes Sr.'s arrest for his third DWI occurred on February 24, just eight days before his son led the Chiefs to victory against the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl. According to the incident report obtained by Us Weekly, Mahomes Sr. was found with an open container of an alcoholic beverage in his vehicle and confessed to having consumed alcohol.

This is not the first time Mahomes Sr. has faced legal trouble due to drunk driving. In 2018, he pleaded guilty to a second DWI charge and served a 40-day jail sentence on weekends in 2019 and 2020. In addition, Mahomes Sr. was arrested in September 2008 in South Dakota, as revealed by District Judge Kerry Russell during the recent court proceedings.

Apart from the DWI charges, Mahomes Sr. was also arrested in June for driving with an invalid license in Tyler, Texas. He is scheduled to appear for a pre-trial hearing regarding this charge on October 15.

Penalties for a third DWI in Texas include a hefty $10,000 fine, a prison term ranging from two to ten years, and the possibility of losing one's driver's license for up to two years, as stated by state law.

Patrick Mahomes Sr. celebrated six months of sobriety earlier this month and expressed his gratitude to his wife, Trisha, as well as his family and friends, in an Instagram post. The couple remarried after divorcing in 2006 and shares two sons, Patrick and Jackson Mahomes.

Patrick Mahomes Sr., a former MLB pitcher who showcased his talents throughout an 11-season career from 1992 to 2003, including a stint with the New York Mets in 1999, has now found himself in legal trouble once again. As he awaits his formal sentencing, the consequences of his actions serve as a reminder of the importance of responsible and sober driving.
