In a concerning turn of events, a former Los Angeles Sheriff's Department deputy, Albert Calibet, 59, has gone missing on the Greek island of Amorgos. A search and rescue operation is currently underway to locate him.

Calibet embarked on a hike from Aegiali towards Katapola on Tuesday morning, starting at 7 a.m. local time. However, he failed to return as planned between noon and 1 p.m. Hellenic Police reported that Calibet was last seen at 11 a.m. by fellow hikers along the trail.

The extreme heat, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit, added to the urgency of the situation. Despite being familiar with the trail and the area, Calibet's whereabouts remain unknown. His friend, who was supposed to meet him at the end of the trail, reported him missing when he failed to appear.

Local authorities have been diligently searching for Calibet, with the assistance of a Hellenic Fire Department helicopter and a drone. These aerial resources have been crucial in scouring the treacherous ravines and inaccessible areas along the trail. In addition, rescue teams have already traversed the trail twice in their efforts to locate him.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna expressed concern for Calibet's well-being and assured his department's commitment to aiding in the search. Calibet has been a part-time employee since his retirement in 2018, having served in the department since 1998.

The missing deputy's brother, Oliver Calibet, and his girlfriend are now en route to Greece to assist in the search and rescue efforts. As the operation continues, hopes are high for Calibet's safe return.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Calibet's family and friends, and our hope is that we can bring him home safely," said Sheriff Luna. "We are actively collaborating with multiple agencies abroad and will utilize every resource available to locate Deputy Calibet and reunite him with his loved ones."

The search for Albert Calibet serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with outdoor activities, especially during extreme weather conditions. Authorities urge hikers to exercise caution and take necessary safety precautions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
