Former Republican Representative George Santos is set to plead guilty on Monday to multiple charges related to campaign finance fraud, according to sources familiar with the matter. Santos, who faces a 23-count superseding indictment in the Eastern District of New York, including charges of wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and making false statements to the Federal Election Commission, had previously pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The disgraced former lawmaker's trial was scheduled to begin in less than a month, but negotiations for a plea deal have been ongoing since late last year. In May 2023, Santos was hit with a 13-count federal indictment, accusing him of wire fraud, money laundering, and theft of public funds. The superseding indictment adds further charges to his case.
Santos, who won the Long Island, New York, congressional seat in 2022, played a pivotal role in securing a narrow Republican majority in the House. However, just weeks before assuming office, various inaccuracies and embellishments in his resume and personal history were exposed by The New York Times.
In December 2023, a majority of Santos' House colleagues voted to expel him from Congress for his dishonesty, officially removing him from his congressional seat. This further tarnished Santos' reputation, already marred by the pending criminal charges.
The exact details of the plea deal are yet to be disclosed, and a lawyer for Santos has not commented on the matter. However, a hearing for the guilty plea is scheduled for Monday at 3 p.m. in federal court.
The FBI and the Eastern District of New York's U.S. attorney have declined to provide any additional comments at this time. The anticipated plea from Santos was initially reported by Talking Points Memo, bringing further attention to the case that has gained significant public interest.
If Santos follows through with the guilty plea, he will face the legal consequences of his actions, and the Republican party will have to grapple with the fallout of yet another significant scandal involving one of their former congressmen.
