Former child star Benji Gregory, known for his role as Brian Tanner on the TV show ALF, tragically passed away on June 13. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner recently announced that the cause of his death was heat exposure, compounded by hepatic cirrhosis. This was determined to be an accidental death.
Gregory's life came to a tragic end when he was found deceased in his car, alongside his loyal service dog Hans, in a Chase Bank parking lot in Peoria, Arizona. Born on May 26, 1978, in suburban Los Angeles, he began his television career at a young age, with guest roles in popular shows such as The A-Team, T.J. Hooker, Punky Brewster, The Twilight Zone, and Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories.
However, it was his role as Brian Tanner on ALF that catapulted him into the spotlight. The show, which aired from 1986 to 1990, followed the hilarious adventures of a furry alien named ALF, voiced by Paul Fusco, who crash-landed on Earth and found himself living with the Tanner family. Gregory's portrayal of Brian Tanner endeared him to audiences, and he appeared in over 100 episodes of the beloved sitcom.
During his time on ALF, Gregory also lent his voice to the animated series Fantastic Max and portrayed Biff Tannen Jr. on the animated Back to the Future comedy series in 1991-92. His talent extended beyond television, as he made appearances in the Penny Marshall-directed spy comedy Jumpin' Jack Flash in 1986 and even starred in commercials for major brands like McDonald's.
After leaving the entertainment industry in 2003, Gregory made a significant life change and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as an aerographer's mate but unfortunately, in 2005, he received an honorable medical discharge. The circumstances surrounding his military service and discharge were not revealed.
The news of Gregory's untimely death has saddened fans and colleagues alike, who remember him as a talented and charismatic actor. He will always be remembered for bringing joy and laughter into the homes of millions through his iconic role on ALF.
