In a highly anticipated exhibition match, legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather faced off against John Gotti III, the grandson of the notorious crime boss. The showdown took place on Saturday night at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, but it was not without its share of controversy and dramatic moments.
During the second round of the match, Gotti voiced his complaints about a punch from Mayweather, leading referee Hector Afu to temporarily halt the fight. Afu penalized Mayweather for an alleged illegal punch to the back of Gotti's head. However, upon review, the replay indicated that Mayweather's punch was indeed legal, causing the boxing icon to express his outrage at the decision.
In a heated moment, Mayweather lightly pushed referee Afu with his right hand and gestured for him to leave the ring. He could be heard shouting "move" and "shut up" while addressing Afu and people outside the ring. Eventually, Afu exited the ring, making way for a substitution by referee Alfredo Uruzquieta.
The match resumed, now under the command of Uruzquieta, with Mayweather and Gotti going toe-to-toe once again. However, neither the exhibition nor the referee swap were acknowledged by Mayweather during his post-fight interview.
Mayweather Promotions, the organization owned by the boxing legend, was responsible for organizing the rematch between Mayweather and Gotti. The exhibition match, devoid of judges and official decisions, ultimately failed to live up to the expectations, leaving fans disappointed by the lackluster performance. By the end, boos resonated throughout the arena.
It is worth noting that Mayweather's last professional fight took place in 2017, culminating in a perfect 50-0 record before his retirement. Despite his success, Mayweather dismissed the possibility of engaging in another exhibition match against 62-year-old boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., who was present at the bout as part of DAZN's broadcast team. "He's one of the legends I look up to and he paved the way for me,'' Mayweather said. "He's older now, and if I do an exhibition with him it's not going to look good for me."
While the exhibition match provided fans with moments of excitement, it was ultimately marred by the controversial referee swap and the lackluster display inside the ring. As the boxing world awaits Mayweather's next move, it remains to be seen if he will once again venture into the world of professional boxing or continue to entertain fans through exhibition matches.
