In a ceremony flanked by veterans who served in the Bay of Pigs invasion, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a measure on Wednesday that paves the way for the history of communism to be taught in public schools from kindergarten to the 12th grade. The bill (SB 1264) was overwhelmingly approved by state lawmakers during the 2024 legislative session.

During the bill signing event held in Hialeah Gardens, Governor DeSantis emphasized the importance of educating students about the "evils of communism." Starting from the 2026-27 school year, lessons on the history of communism will be incorporated into the curriculum, ensuring that the instruction is age appropriate and developmentally suitable for students.

Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. explained that the curriculum will cover various topics related to communism, including its history in the United States and the tactics used by communists. Lessons will also address the atrocities committed in foreign countries under the guidance of communism.

"The goal is to spread this knowledge across the curriculum from kindergarten to 12th grade," said Commissioner Diaz. The Department of Education will be responsible for developing academic standards for these lessons.

The bill signing took place on the 63rd anniversary of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, a significant event in the fight against the Fidel Castro regime. Governor DeSantis was accompanied by veterans who fought in the invasion, including Rafael Montalvo, president of the Brigade 2506 Veterans Association. Montalvo highlighted the importance of teaching the history of communism in schools, stating that "the most important fight against communism is the one that's done in the schoolrooms."

Currently, Florida students already receive instruction on communism in high school social studies classes, as well as in seventh-grade civics and government courses. Additionally, a high school U.S. government class includes 45 minutes of instruction on "Victims of Communism Day" as a requirement for graduation.

By signing this bill, Florida aims to ensure that future generations are well-informed about the history and consequences of communism. The step has been applauded by veterans and supporters who believe that educating students about communism's pernicious effects will help safeguard the values of freedom and democracy.
