A source familiar with the decision has confirmed the change in schedule, stating that DeSantis will now have a speaking role.
The source, who is involved in planning convention activities, did not disclose which specific night DeSantis would be speaking. This announcement comes after CNN reported on Tuesday that DeSantis would not have a speaking role at the convention.
A source close to DeSantis stated that they had never been informed that the Governor would not be speaking at the convention. "We have been told for a while we had a speaking slot and have never been told we do not," the source said.
The relationship between former President Donald Trump and Governor DeSantis has had its ups and downs over the years. Trump's endorsement of DeSantis in 2018 played a significant role in his successful bid for Florida governorship. However, their relationship became strained during the 2024 Republican primary, with both candidates attacking each other. DeSantis eventually dropped out of the race in January after a disappointing performance in the Iowa caucuses.
Since then, DeSantis has pledged to utilize his donor network to raise funds for Trump's campaign. Several events are being planned, although none have been confirmed yet. It remains to be seen how this renewed speaking role at the Republican National Convention will impact their relationship moving forward.
While DeSantis is set to speak at the convention, there is still no confirmed speaking slot for former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who was the final Republican to drop out of the GOP primary. Haley and Trump had a contentious primary race, with Haley famously stating that she would not "kiss the ring." However, in May, she announced her intention to vote for Trump and released her 97 delegates to support him at the convention.
Despite this show of support, Haley has not yet been offered a role at the convention. A source involved in the planning of convention activities confirmed that Haley was not invited to speak. However, Haley's longtime senior aide, Chaney Denton, expressed that Haley is not bothered by the omission, stating that "Trump deserves the convention he wants" and that Haley wishes him the best.
In comparison, during the 2016 Republican National Convention, both Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who finished second and third in the Republican primary, were given speaking slots. The convention marked the formal nomination of Donald Trump as the Republican candidate for president.
As the convention approaches, political observers will be closely watching to see how the speaking roster evolves and what impact it may have on the relationships within the Republican party.
