In a commanding performance, the Florida Gators secured their first Southeastern Conference victory of the 2024 season by defeating the Mississippi State Bulldogs with a score of 45-28. Florida's veteran quarterback, Graham Mertz, played a pivotal role in the win by throwing three touchdowns, rushing for another, and guiding the Gators to a road triumph. This victory marked a significant turnaround for Florida following two previous home losses against high-major conference opponents earlier in the month.

Mertz, now in his second season with the UF after transferring from Wisconsin, displayed remarkable accuracy by completing 90.5% of his passes, throwing for 201 yards. The Gators' offense excelled with a total of 503 yards, showcasing a balanced attack with 226 yards gained on the ground and 277 through the air. Mertz set the tone early in the game by delivering all three of his touchdown passes in the first half, including a 3-yard connection with tight end Hayden Hansen.

Mississippi State attempted to stage a comeback, narrowing the margin to 14 points by halftime. However, Mertz continued to lead the Gators effectively, responding to the Bulldogs' offensive efforts with strategic drives and maintaining control of the game. With a solid performance from both Mertz and the Gators' defense, Florida managed to secure a convincing victory on the road. The win was a much-needed boost for the Gators, reaffirming their competitiveness in the SEC.
