In a shocking turn of events, newly released footage shows Carlos Guillermo Alonso, the 78-year-old boater suspected of killing 15-year-old Ella Riley Adler in a hit-and-run accident, calmly docking his boat after the tragic incident. The video, obtained by NBC6, captured Alonso leaving his Coral Gables home on May 11 around 3 p.m. aboard his 42-foot Boston Whaler.
Approximately an hour later, Adler was allegedly struck by Alonso's boat while she was wakeboarding in Biscayne Bay, the day before Mother's Day. Witnesses reported that the captain appeared unaware of the collision as the boat fled the scene. The video then shows Alonso returning to his dock, nonchalantly securing his boat at around 4:30 p.m., seemingly oblivious to the fact that he may have hit someone.
Alonso's lawyer, Lauren Krasnoff, released the video in an effort to debunk "awful and unfounded rumors" that her client was aware of the incident and attempted to hide it. She emphasized that Alonso was alone, not drinking, and exhibited no signs of suspicion or guilt. Krasnoff stated that Alonso would fully cooperate with law enforcement in their investigation.
While Alonso has no criminal record and does not drink, according to his attorney, the Miami Beach high schooler suffered fatal injuries from the collision. First responders described the scene as Adler being left floating with a significant amount of blood in the water. Despite immediate efforts to save her, she tragically succumbed to her injuries.
Alonso has been fully cooperating with officials in their investigation. His boat has been seized and taken to a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission facility for further examination. As of now, no charges have been filed against Alonso as the investigation remains ongoing.
The loss of Adler, a talented dancer with over 100 performances under her belt with the Miami City Ballet, has devastated her family and the community. A funeral service was held on Monday at the Temple Beth Shalom synagogue, where friends and family honored Adler's talent and vibrant personality. Her father's heartfelt letter, read by her aunt during the service, expressed the immense grief and the impact Adler had on their lives.
The tragic incident has left many questioning how such an unthinkable tragedy could occur. As the investigation continues, authorities hope to gather all the necessary evidence to determine the full circumstances surrounding the hit-and-run.
