In a tragic incident on Friday, a small plane crashed in an Arvada neighborhood, resulting in the death of one person. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office confirmed the fatality and stated that the details of the deceased individual, as well as the cause and manner of death, were not available at the time of their statement on Monday.
According to information shared in a press conference by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the plane was carrying four people, all of whom were rushed to the hospital. Two of the passengers were confirmed to be adults, and it remains unclear whether the other two individuals were adults or children. The Arvada Fire Department initially mentioned that two juvenile individuals were among the injured parties.
The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. when the plane struck a fence and a tree at the intersection of Oberon Road and Balsam Street before ultimately crashing into a yard at the corner of Oberon Road and Brentwood Street. The NTSB revealed that the 1969 Beechcraft 35 aircraft had taken off from Centennial Airport and was reportedly en route to the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, located approximately 30 miles northwest of Centennial Airport. The crash took place about 15 minutes after takeoff.
Since the press conference with the NTSB, little additional information about the incident has been released. The reasons behind the plane crash, as well as the identities of those onboard and their intended destination, remain unconfirmed.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the pilot had contacted air traffic control, informing them of engine problems and expressing the desire to make an emergency landing at the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport. However, shortly after this communication, the plane tragically crashed. The pilot specifically mentioned extreme power loss in a subsequent call, stating that they would not be able to make it and would have to find a place to "put it down."
Eyewitnesses in the neighborhood reported seeing the low-flying plane swaying from side to side before the crash. The plane's left wing collided with a large spruce tree, causing it to skid down the road and ultimately collide with a parked pickup truck. The impact pushed the truck into another vehicle in the home's driveway.
Randy Hamrick, a resident of the house where the plane crashed, recounted the terrifying experience. He initially believed a train had derailed before realizing the source of the explosion and violent tremors was the crashing plane. The neighborhood immediately mobilized, with residents using garden hoses to battle the ensuing blaze even before the arrival of emergency services.
Debris from the wreckage was scattered throughout nearby yards and the street, causing damage to properties and further highlighting the magnitude of the crash.
As investigations into the crash continue, authorities aim to determine the cause of the engine problems that led to this devastating incident. The community mourns the loss of a life and stands united in support of the victims and their families during this difficult time.
