Florida, California, and Texas have unfortunately witnessed the highest number of mass shootings, with 81% of these incidents involving handguns and 16% involving assault rifles. The use of assault rifles, however, resulted in significantly more casualties, making them deadlier than handgun shootings. An important factor contributing to the gravity of such incidents is the utilization of high capacity magazines, enabling shooters to fire more rounds without needing to reload, leading to significantly higher casualties.

The good news is that several proven solutions exist to prevent mass shootings. Mandatory waiting periods are one such measure that requires potential gun buyers to wait for a designated period, providing a cooling-off period that can deter impulsive acts of gun violence, including homicides and suicides. Furthermore, banning large capacity magazines has proven effective in reducing casualties, with nine states and the District of Columbia already implementing such restrictions.

Extreme risk protection orders offer a proactive approach to temporarily restrict individuals exhibiting clear signs of violence from accessing firearms. These laws not only aim to prevent mass shootings but also reduce the risk of suicides. Restricting access to guns for domestic abusers is also crucial since 53% of mass shootings are related to domestic violence, with 61% occurring within the home.

States can further enhance gun safety by mandating secure storage of firearms, preventing unauthorized access and reducing the likelihood of incidents involving underage individuals. Proper storage could potentially cut off access to the murder weapon for the 80% of school shooters under the age of 18 who obtain guns from their own homes or those of friends or relatives.

Raising the minimum age to purchase an assault rifle is another measure that can prove effective. The recent tragedy in Highland Park, Illinois, where a shooter took the lives of seven innocent individuals, highlights the importance of age restrictions. Had the minimum age for purchasing an assault rifle been higher, this individual would not have been able to acquire the weapon in the first place.

Comparing two similarly sized states with different gun laws, it is evident that regulations play a significant role in curbing gun violence. Missouri, with its limited firearm restrictions, has experienced seven mass shootings since 2009, while Massachusetts, with stricter laws, has had only two. This stark contrast highlights the impact that comprehensive gun safety measures can have on reducing the occurrence of mass shootings.

However, implementing these solutions faces several roadblocks. One significant challenge arises from neighboring states with relaxed firearm regulations. According to a gun trace report by the city of Chicago, over half of the guns used in crimes were bought from neighboring states like Indiana, Mississippi, and Wisconsin. States like Illinois, despite efforts to enhance gun regulations, struggle to prevent firearms from pouring in across state lines.

Additionally, attempts at implementing legislation can face legal challenges. For example, when New York State attempted to impose restrictions on concealed carrying laws, the Supreme Court struck it down. While recent bipartisan legislation at the federal level has expanded background checks, prohibited domestic abusers from purchasing guns, and increased penalties for illegal gun purchases, many advocates argue that more needs to be done.
