Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has submitted her resignation as she prepares to take on a new role as the European Union's foreign policy chief. Kallas, who has been leading the small Baltic republic since 2021, handed in her resignation to President Alar Karis. However, she will continue to serve as prime minister in a caretaker capacity until early August.
The 47-year-old Kallas, who is also stepping down as the leader of the liberal Reform Party, made history as Estonia's first female prime minister. Following the recent EU elections, she was chosen by EU leaders to replace Josep Borrell as the bloc's top diplomat.
One of Kallas' notable stances during her tenure has been her criticism of Russia and its alleged expansionist aims. Particularly since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Kallas has been a vocal advocate for providing military aid to Kyiv. Estonia has played a significant role in this regard and has become one of the top suppliers of military aid to Ukraine in relation to GDP.
Reflecting on her time in office, Kallas acknowledged the challenges she faced during the war in Ukraine, stating, "This was a very hard time." Her strong stance on the issue has consistently urged NATO and EU allies to stand in solidarity with Ukraine.
The process of appointing a new prime minister is yet to be finalized. Climate Minister Kristen Michal is a potential successor to Kallas. However, the composition of the government would also depend on how the Reform Party adjusts its coalition with Estonia 200 and the Social Democrats.
As Kallas prepares to take on her new role as the EU's foreign policy chief, there will likely be anticipation and interest in how she will navigate the bloc's foreign relations and address key global challenges.
