In a recent development, a political action committee (PAC) supported by billionaire Elon Musk is facing scrutiny from the Michigan secretary of state's office for its voter data collection practices. The controversial PAC, called America PAC, was reportedly created and financially backed by Musk, who is known for his role as the CEO of companies such as Tesla and SpaceX. The committee is actively supporting former President Donald Trump.

Although legal experts have been unable to identify any specific state laws that may have been violated by the PAC, investigations are underway to determine if any potential violations of state law have occurred. The primary concern revolves around the collection of detailed voter information, particularly from residents of Michigan and other battleground states.

According to sources, the America PAC website allows users to submit their personal data through a "register to vote" section. After providing their ZIP code, address, and phone number, individuals with a Michigan address are directed to a "thank you" page, followed by a request to complete a form. However, as of now, no such form exists on the website.

A spokesperson for the Michigan secretary of state's office stressed the importance of transparency regarding personal information usage by PACs, especially those claiming to aid voter registration. The office announced that it will examine the activities of America PAC and will refer any potential violations of state law to the Michigan Attorney General's office, if necessary.

CNBC initially reported on the efforts of America PAC and highlighted the fact that the website does not directly register individuals to vote, particularly those residing in swing states. Sources familiar with the PAC's operations mentioned that the website links were functional at one point, but have encountered issues subsequently. It was also revealed that the group is planning to launch a new website in the coming weeks.

While it remains uncertain whether any state laws have been violated by America PAC in Michigan, legal experts have weighed in on the situation. Former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, Barbara McQuade, stated that she was not aware of any laws being broken in this case. However, concerns have been raised by Mary Massaron, a partner at law firm Plunkett Cooney, regarding the lack of information or links provided for voter registration.

Michigan's secretary of state, Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat known for her stance against election misinformation, has previously faced legal action from the Republican National Committee and other Michigan Democrats on two occasions this year.

As investigations into the America PAC continue, it remains to be seen whether any conclusive evidence emerges regarding potential state law violations. The scrutiny surrounding the PAC's voter data collection practices has served as a reminder of the importance of transparent and accountable campaign finance practices in the political landscape.
