In response to a notice from Tehran, the Egyptian Civil Aviation Ministry has ordered Egyptian airlines to avoid Iranian airspace for three hours on Thursday. The warning comes in the wake of escalating tensions in the region following the recent assassination of Hamas' leader in Tehran.
The Egyptian ministry stated that the ban on Iranian airspace was communicated through a notice sent by Iran to all commercial airlines. The restriction is set to last from 4:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. on Thursday. Additionally, the warning from Iran also covered a three-hour period earlier on Wednesday.
Amidst these developments, Saeed Chalandari, the head of Iran's international airport in Tehran, denied reports of a warning against entering the airspace of western Iran. However, it remains unclear whether this denial applies to the entirety of the country.
The assassination of Hamas' top leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran has heightened concerns and provoked responses from various parties. Israel, in particular, has been on high alert, anticipating a potential attack by Iran and its allied militias in response to the assassinations of Haniyeh and a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut.
Both Iran and Hamas have held Israel responsible for the explosion in Tehran on July 31 that claimed Haniyeh's life. However, Israel has neither confirmed nor denied any involvement in the incident.
This recent escalation has led to many international carriers suspending flights to Lebanon, Israel, and Iran, as they seek to mitigate potential risks and prioritize passenger safety.
As tensions continue to mount in the region, the ban on Egyptian airlines entering Iranian airspace demonstrates the efforts of various nations to navigate a volatile situation and ensure the security of their citizens and airspace.
