In a move to fortify their wide receiver group, the Philadelphia Eagles have officially signed veteran receiver John Ross to a one-year deal, as announced by the team on Thursday. This signing comes on the heels of DeVante Parker's recent retirement, making Ross the new addition to the roster.

The 28-year-old Ross had previously joined the Eagles on a tryout during their rookie minicamp earlier this spring. Although he was not immediately signed following the tryout, his performance evidently caught the attention of the Eagles' coaching staff, prompting them to bring him aboard.

Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing in at 194 pounds, Ross initially retired before the start of the previous season. However, his participation in the Eagles' rookie camp tryout demonstrated his desire to make a comeback in the NFL. Now, with his signing, he will have the opportunity to earn a spot on the Eagles' 53-man roster during the upcoming spring and summer season.

Ross entered the league as the 9th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, selected by the Cincinnati Bengals out of the University of Washington. He made headlines during the Combine that year, breaking the 40-yard dash record with an impressive time of 4.22 seconds. This record stood until recently when Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy surpassed it with a time of 4.21 seconds.

Though Ross showcased remarkable speed, his professional career did not unfold as expected. Across four seasons with the Bengals, he managed just 51 receptions for 733 yards and 10 touchdowns. His most productive season came in 2019 when he recorded 28 catches for 506 yards and 3 touchdowns in just 8 games. His progress, however, was hindered by injuries that derailed his potential.

In 2021, Ross joined the New York Giants but struggled to make a significant impact, accumulating only 11 catches for 224 yards and a touchdown in 10 games. Throughout his career, he has maintained an average of 15.4 yards per catch, showcasing his ability to serve as a deep threat when he has been able to stay on the field.

With Ross now joining the Eagles' wide receiver corps, the team hopes that his speed and skills will contribute to their offensive arsenal. As the Eagles have already commenced their organized team activities (OTAs), Ross will have the opportunity to acclimate to the system and compete for a prominent role within the team.

Overall, the Eagles' decision to sign John Ross reflects their determination to bolster their receiving options and maximize their offensive firepower. Whether the veteran receiver can revitalize his career and make a meaningful impact remains to be seen, but his potential and past accomplishments offer glimpses of what he can bring to the table for the Philadelphia Eagles.
